WHAT IF?
SO, WHAT...
QUOTE: “Do not take the first step without considering the last.”
Carl von Clausewitz
By now most people who decided to evaluate their goals for this year may have discovered it is more challenging than they first thought.
What If someone you respect, and trust approaches you to have a conversation about their job?
The individual states, “I don’t like my job, it causes me stress and doesn’t fit my career goals.”
Your response might be, So What if you don’t like your job? Well, you are not alone. Many people around the world don’t like their job. Like you, their job provides a livable salary, healthcare benefits, and time off for vacation. The premise is they work to live.
“True, but I’m not sure if I can continue to work in an environment that is stressful and offers no career advancement opportunities.”
So, what? Sounds like a roadblock to me.
What if you researched current job openings and had a professional resume writer prepare one for you to apply for one of these job openings?
“I thought about that but what if I get a response to an interview?”
So, what if you do? Use some personal time and accept the interview.
You may discover you have value for that company. Your only decision at that point is to accept or reject the offer and remain in the job you currently have. Perhaps the offer requires you to travel to a site and be away from home and your family, which is not a requirement now. Would you still accept the job offer?
“What if management finds out that I have applied?”
So, what if they do? Yes, in a worst-case unlikely scenario, it could jeopardize your current position or put you on a list of potential layoffs. However, all you are doing is finding out your value on the open market. It may help you to reduce your stress knowing you are a value elsewhere.
“Thank you for your thoughts. I will contact a career company to find out about having a resume written for me.”
Keep me posted.
The purpose of The Essence of Reality is to remember that every moment of every day you have two choices; accept or reject what comes into your life whether it is career-related or something personal. In actuality when a decision is required, it generally will affect both. You can use the What if and So What skill set to help you through an important decision, by thinking with the end in mind.
In life what goes around will likely come around and you need to be prepared for what that may require of you or how it may affect your job and/or personal life.
